A note can be small without being unfinished.

A note can be small without being unfinished.

It can hold one observation, one useful link, or a sentence that keeps returning. The shape is not a lesser essay. It is simply the amount of room the thought needs.

A publishing practice becomes easier when every idea does not have to become an event.

Write it clearly. Give it a stable address. Let it remain exactly as large as it wants to be.

The web is at its best when a thought has somewhere dependable to live.

The web is at its best when a thought has somewhere dependable to live.

A stable address is a small promise: the title may sharpen, the sentences may improve, and the surrounding site may change, but the path remains useful.

That promise matters to readers, feeds, links, search indexes, and your future self.

A practical rule

Choose the public path deliberately. Preserve old paths as aliases. Treat identity as part of the writing rather than an implementation detail.

Publishing does not have to be a performance of certainty.

Publishing does not have to be a performance of certainty.

It can be a way of making thought available: edited enough to respect the reader, open enough to admit that the thinking may continue.

Keep the claim proportional to what you know.

Name the evidence you actually have.

Leave uncertainty visible when it matters.

Leave room for revision.

Prefer a useful sentence over a dramatic conclusion.

The useful thing about a personal site is not that it competes with every other place you could publish.

The useful thing about a personal site is not that it competes with every other place you could publish.

It is that it remains yours.

You can keep the typography plain, the archive legible, the feeds open, and the machinery small enough to understand. You can link outward generously because the work has a home to return to.

That is enough infrastructure for a durable writing practice.
